Writing

I started my career in media, where I wrote about identity, internet culture, music, games, and the strange little worlds people make for themselves online. Here are a few I still like:

Selected writing

• K-pop’s The Deep Is Bringing Y2K Back (PAPER)
• Aja Is Gaming The System (INTO)
• A Brief History of the Transformation Sequence (Digg)
• Neopets Let Me Be A Gay Kid Online (Digg)

Dear BJ

A letter series with my close friend BJ because we were too lazy to start a podcast and this is way easier. Published on okay, so.

• Dear BJ, you get what you get. And sometimes that’s Dominican Christian radio.
• Dear BJ, the worst is yet to come. On being a secret catastrophizer.
• Dear BJ, I am responsible for childhood illiteracy. If you give a Ryan a Spider-Man library card.
• Dear BJ, I am a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon. My name is uncommon, but apparently not uncommon enough.
• Dear BJ, I miss being uncomfortable. Comfort is nice, but it doesn't give you stories to tell.
• Dear BJ, I write to you from New Jersey. Look, they even have Wi-Fi!
• Dear BJ, I’m looking for a new home. How could I bring a child into such a tumultuous life?
• Dear BJ, ever met a iPad dog parent? On the world of dog parks and pet parenting.
